The short answer: a stack of 4R or square prints, some string and tape, and an hour the night before will decorate a party better than anything from the party shop, because the pictures are of the person being celebrated. The five ideas below go from simplest to most involved, and all of them survive being handed around by children.

1. Balloon photo chandelier

Tie a square or 4R print to the string of each helium balloon, at different heights, and let the bunch float above the cake table. Use a hole punch in one corner and loop the string through so the photo hangs straight. Twenty to thirty photos make a good cluster. Perfect Square prints spin nicely because they are symmetrical.

2. Accordion photo card for the table

An accordion card stands on its own and doubles as a thank-you for guests.

Fold a strip of card into a zigzag and stick one print on each panel, in date order. It stands on the table as a centrepiece, and at the end of the night it is a gift for the grandparents. Small prints are easiest: Instax Mini size or 3R. A folded strip of 260 gsm card from our card printing is stiff enough to stand.

3. Fairy-light photo banner

String a set of battery fairy lights along a wall and clip prints to the wire with small wooden pegs, one every 15 to 20 cm. Mix 4R prints and retro prints for variety. It takes ten minutes, it is the most photographed corner of any party, and the lights make phone photos of the wall look good. Battery lights are safer than mains ones around children and balloons.

4. A number or letter made of photos

Cut the birthday number or the first letter of the name from a large sheet of foam board or thick card, then cover it with overlapping prints in order from the earliest photo to the newest. Thirty to forty 4R prints cover a number about 50 cm tall. It leans against the wall for the party and then hangs in the bedroom. For a cleaner version, we can print the whole collage as one poster or mount it on 5 mm foam board.

5. Photo stands and holders on every table

A print in a small stand at each place setting works as a name card and a keepsake. Small photo holders with a flip-open stand hold a print upright without a frame. For a gift table, a few ready-made frames with the best photos of the year look tidier than loose prints.

Ordering tip. Most of these use the same photos, so order one batch of 4R prints at $0.35 each and a batch of squares, and split them between the ideas. Prints are ready in 1 to 2 working days, so order by Wednesday for a weekend party.
