What size for my wall?

Measure the wall and the furniture under it. We work out a size that looks right and where to hang it. Or start from a print size and see how it looks on three typical walls.

Guide: art should span 60 to 75 percent of the furniture below it, the centre sits about 150 cm from the floor, and the bottom edge stays 15 to 25 cm above a sofa back.

How the planner works

Type in the wall and whatever sits under the spot. The planner does the sizing and shows it to scale.

Measures the space

It takes the wall width, ceiling height, and the width and height of the sofa, bed or console below.

Finds the right span

Art above furniture should cover about two thirds of its width. The planner splits that across the number of pieces you want and picks the closest size we make.

Sets the height

It centres the piece at eye level, lifts it if the furniture is in the way, and draws the wall to scale so you can judge the balance.

Where the numbers come from

These are the guidelines galleries and interior stylists use. The planner applies them for you.

60 to 75%

The two-thirds rule

Art above furniture should span 60 to 75 percent of the furniture width. Narrower looks lost, wider looks top heavy. With nothing under it, 50 to 60 percent of the wall.

150 cm

Eye level

Galleries hang the centre of a piece 145 to 152 cm from the floor, the eye height of a standing adult. Most homes hang art too high.

15 to 25 cm

The gap above furniture

The bottom edge sits 15 to 25 cm above a sofa back or headboard, so the art reads as part of the group rather than floating.

5 to 8 cm

Spacing in a set

A pair or a set of three looks best with 5 to 8 cm between frames, measured as one shape. Two pieces is a diptych, three is a triptych, and they should share a size and frame.

Landscape, portrait, square

Landscape suits wide furniture. Portrait suits narrow walls and either side of a doorway. Square is the easiest to group.

2 hooks

Hanging it

Anything above A2 wants two hooks so it hangs level. On concrete HDB walls use drilled anchors, not adhesive strips.

Common questions

Before you hang it

Mark the suggested width and height on the wall with painter's tape and live with it for a day. If it looks right, order that size as a canvas, a framed print or a metal print.

Canvas is the lightest and needs no glass, good above seating. Framed prints suit photographs and a more finished look. Metal prints are the sharpest and wipe clean, good for kitchens and bright rooms. Our Find Your Wall Art tool walks you through it.

Yes. WhatsApp us a straight-on photo of the wall with one measurement, and we will mock the print onto it at scale.

Below 250 cm, go one size down and keep the top edge at least 20 cm under the ceiling. The planner already lowers the piece when it would sit too high.
