You bought the frame first. Now you're standing at our counter with a RIBBA under your arm asking what size to print — and the honest answer is "it depends on whether you're keeping the mat."
That question comes up at KT Colour almost every week, so here is the complete guide: every IKEA frame size, every current frame range, the exact print to order with the mat in or out, which sizes your phone photos can handle, and three gallery-wall layouts you can build entirely from IKEA sizes.
The one rule: frame size is not print size

An IKEA frame is sold by its outer glass size — 30 × 40 cm, say. Most ranges ship with a white mat (IKEA calls it a mount) whose opening is one size smaller. So a 30 × 40 frame with the mat shows a 21 × 30 cm photo; the same frame without the mat takes a full 30 × 40 print. Order the wrong one and you're either trimming with kitchen scissors or watching a small print rattle around in a big window.
Decide first: mat in, or mat out? Then read the matching column below.
The master chart: every IKEA size → what to print
These outer sizes and mat openings are IKEA's own standard set and are shared by every current range (RÖDALM, FISKBO, LOMVIKEN, KNOPPÄNG, EDSBRUK) and by the older RIBBA. Prices are our IKEA-size prints on Epson lustre paper, cut to the exact centimetre.
| Frame (outer) | Mat opening | Print with mat IN | Print with mat OUT |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 × 15 cm | 8 × 12 cm | 3R print, trimmed | 4R photo print (10.2 × 15.2) — $0.35 |
| 13 × 18 cm | 10 × 15 cm | 4R photo print — $0.35 | 5R photo print (12.7 × 17.8) |
| 21 × 30 cm | 13 × 18 cm | 5R photo print | 21 × 30 IKEA-size — $5.90 (A4 also fits) |
| 30 × 40 cm | 21 × 30 cm | 21 × 30 — $5.90 | 30 × 40 — $11.20 |
| 40 × 50 cm | 30 × 40 cm | 30 × 40 — $11.20 | 40 × 50 — $18.60 |
| 50 × 70 cm | 40 × 50 cm | 40 × 50 — $18.60 | 50 × 70 — $32.60 |
| 61 × 91 cm | 50 × 70 cm | 50 × 70 — $32.60 | 61 × 91 — $51.70 |
Square frames
IKEA's square sizes are 16, 25, 32, 35 and 50 cm — we cut all five as standard, so nothing needs trimming. Square frames usually come without a mat; if yours has one, the opening is typically one size down (a 25 cm mat shows a 16 cm print, a 32 shows a 25, and so on).
| Square frame | Print (no mat) | Price |
|---|---|---|
| 16 × 16 cm | 16 × 16 | $2.40 |
| 25 × 25 cm | 25 × 25 | $5.90 |
| 32 × 32 cm | 32 × 32 | $9.60 |
| 35 × 35 cm | 35 × 35 | $11.40 |
| 50 × 50 cm | 50 × 50 | $23.30 |

Frame by frame: the five ranges IKEA Singapore sells now
Same sizes, different personalities. As of September 2026, IKEA Singapore stocks five picture-frame ranges. Check the sticker on the back of your frame for the name, then use the note on the mat.
RÖDALM — the new RIBBA
IKEA's current headline frame and the direct replacement for RIBBA: a clean box-style profile in black, white and wood-effect, in the widest choice of sizes (six in Singapore). Mat included on the rectangular sizes. If you're buying new for a gallery wall, this is the one, and the master chart above applies exactly.
FISKBO
The budget frame: slim plastic, lots of colours, no mat. Always use the "mat OUT" column. A tip from the counter: FISKBO's plastic front is the most reflective of the range, so choose our lustre paper rather than glossy.
LOMVIKEN
Slim aluminium in silver or black, mat included. The metal edge suits black-and-white photography, architecture and anything modern. Standard sizes.
KNOPPÄNG
Thin wood-effect frame in warm tones, mat included. Light enough for children's-room walls and rental flats where you'd rather use strips than nails. Standard sizes.
EDSBRUK
Large-format black frames with a wide mat, made for the big sizes (typically 50 × 70 and 61 × 91). Mat included. Because the mat is wide, the "mat IN" print is the one to order unless you deliberately want the edge-to-edge poster look.
Older IKEA frames you may already own
These are no longer sold in Singapore but are on thousands of walls, and they all share the same sizes as the chart above:
- RIBBA — the original gallery-wall classic. Deep box profile, mat included. Everything in this guide was written with RIBBA in mind; RÖDALM is its like-for-like successor.
- SILVERHÖJDEN — ornate silver or gold moulding, mat included on most sizes, but a few openings are cut differently, so measure before ordering.
- HOVSTA, DALSKÄRR, VIRSERUM — wood-effect and ornate ranges, mostly with mats.
- SANNAHED — deep square shadow boxes (25 × 25 and 35 × 35), no mat; order the matching square print.

A4 fits the 21 × 30 — and A3 does not fit the 30 × 40
Good news first: an A4 print (21 × 29.7 cm) fits the 21 × 30 frame perfectly — we've tested it, and the 3 mm disappears under the frame lip. So for that one size, print A4.
The trap is A3. People assume A3 (29.7 × 42 cm) fits the 30 × 40 frame. It doesn't — it's 2 cm too tall. You'd be cutting a strip off your photo. The same goes for 16 × 20 inches versus 40 × 50 cm, and 20 × 28 versus 50 × 70. IKEA's sizes are metric-only and match nothing in the standard photo range — which is exactly why we cut a dedicated IKEA-size range. Order 30 × 40, get 30 × 40, and it drops in.
Mat in or mat out? A one-minute decision
- Mat in when the photo is a portrait, has a strong single subject, or you're building a uniform gallery wall — the white border adds breathing room and makes cheap frames look expensive.
- Mat out when the photo is a landscape or cityscape that benefits from scale, when you want maximum image for the money, or when the frame has no mat (FISKBO, SANNAHED).
- Mixing both on one wall works if you keep one rule constant: all mats in, or all frames the same colour.
Will your photo survive the size? A resolution guide
The number that matters is pixels, not megabytes. Check your photo's dimensions (on a phone: open the photo → info) against this table — the "sharp" column is what we'd print for our own walls; "acceptable" is fine for viewing from across a room.
| Print size | Sharp (long edge) | Acceptable |
|---|---|---|
| 21 × 30 cm | 2,400 px | 1,500 px |
| 30 × 40 cm | 3,000 px | 2,000 px |
| 40 × 50 cm | 3,600 px | 2,400 px |
| 50 × 70 cm | 4,200 px | 2,800 px |
| 61 × 91 cm | 5,400 px | 3,600 px |
A modern phone photo (4,000 px on the long edge) is sharp up to 40 × 50 and acceptable at 50 × 70 — as long as it's the original file, not a WhatsApp-compressed copy. We check every file before printing and tell you if it won't hold up.
Three gallery walls built entirely from IKEA sizes

- The Grid — six 30 × 40 frames, all the same orientation, 5 cm gaps. Six prints at 30 × 40 cost $67.20 with the mats out, or $35.40 at 21 × 30 with the mats in. Foolproof in an HDB living room.
- The Anchor — one 50 × 70 hero shot in the middle, two 30 × 40 either side, two 21 × 30 below. Great above a sofa; the big frame carries the wall.
- The Ledge — a picture ledge with 50, 32, 25 and 16 cm squares leaning against the wall. No nails, re-arrangeable, and the whole set of prints is under $42.
Skip the IKEA trip entirely?

Sometimes the frame is the point and this guide gets you there. But if you simply want a photo on the wall, our framed prints arrive already printed, fitted and backed — wooden, aluminium or acrylic, from 4R to A3, ready to hang. Our ready-made frames are cut to standard photo sizes, so no mat maths. And for a statement piece, a canvas wrap or poster print up to A0 needs no frame at all.
Quick answers
Does A4 fit a 30 × 40 IKEA frame? Only with the mat in (the opening is 21 × 30). Without the mat, order a 30 × 40 print.
What size photo for a RIBBA 50 × 70? 40 × 50 with the mat, 50 × 70 without.
Do all IKEA frames come with a mat? No — RÖDALM, LOMVIKEN, KNOPPÄNG and EDSBRUK do (and the older RIBBA did); FISKBO doesn't. When there is no mat, order the "mat OUT" size.
Can I order an odd size? Yes — custom sizes are available on our poster prints; WhatsApp us the frame's opening measurement.
Glossy or lustre behind glass? Lustre. Glossy paper behind glass doubles the reflections in a bright Singapore room.
