New Zealand requirements

  • Photo size:
    35 × 45 mm
  • Background: plain and light, but NOT white — light grey, light blue or cream

New Zealand explicitly rejects a white background. The official passport application form states the background "must be plain and light, but not white", and Immigration New Zealand says the same for visa and NZeTA photos. The head including hair should fill about 80 per cent of the image height. Note that the NZ Passports website summarises this as "plain, light-coloured" and omits the "not white" wording — the application form is the strict source.

Photo tips for the best result

  • Neutral expression, mouth closed, both eyes open and clearly visible
  • Face the camera squarely — no tilting or turning
  • Even lighting on the face, with no shadow falling on the background
  • Stand about half a metre in front of a plain wall, with the camera around 1.5 m away
  • Ask someone else to take it using the rear camera — arm's-length selfies distort the face
  • Send the original file, uncropped and unfiltered

We size, position and adjust the background so the photo meets the specification. We do not retouch faces — several authorities, including ICA Singapore, reject photos whose features have been altered.
